Quick Checklist: How to Keep Your Heat Pump Healthy
- Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear.
- Check for leaves, debris, or snow build-up weekly.
- Book a yearly service with a qualified engineer.
- Check vents and filters regularly for blockages.
- Avoid covering the unit or enclosing it too tightly.
- Keep the outdoor fan blades clean and unobstructed.
- Listen for unusual noises – they can indicate an issue.
- Don’t worry if it frosts up occasionally in cold weather – the unit will defrost itself.
1. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean & Clear
Most heat pumps are installed outside your home—free-standing on a base, mounted on a wall, or placed near a window.
- Make sure there’s at least 30cm of space around the uni.t
- Clear away leaves, twigs, or garden clutter that could block airflow.
- In winter, brush off snow or ice that might collect on or around the unit.
- Never cover the unit with a bag, tarpaulin, or box – it needs to “breathe.”
Tip: Set a reminder once a week to give it a quick visual check — it only takes a minute!
2. Listen for Unusual Sounds
Your heat pump will make a gentle humming noise when running.
Things to look out for:
- Rattling, knocking or high-pitched sounds
- Loud vibration or buzzing that’s new.
- The unit stops and starts frequently.
Call us – it may need a quick check-up or part replacement before it becomes a bigger issue.
3. Book Your Annual Heat Pump Service
Just like a boiler, your heat pump needs a professional annual service to:
- Check the refrigerant pressure and system performance
- Clean the coils and internally.
- Make sure it’s running safely and efficiently.y
- Catching any early signs of wear and tear.
APE Heating offers affordable annual servicing for all types of heat pumps — whether we installed yours or not.
4. Don’t Worry About Frost Or Mist
During colder months, it’s normal for the outdoor unit to:
- Look frosty
- Give off mist
- Make a whooshing sound during a defrost cycle.
It’s all part of how the unit regulates itself.
5. Check the Filters & Vents
If your system has indoor units with fans (air-to-air), check and clean the air filters regularly, especially during high-use months. Dust and dirt build-up can block airflow and reduce efficiency.
Most filters can be:
- Removed easily
- Vacuumed or rinsed under cool water
- Left to dry before putting back in
Less regular filter cleaning is needed for hair-to-water systems, but vents and radiators should be dust-free.
6. Safety First
Heat pumps are very safe, but here’s how to keep them that way:
- Don’t tamper with internal components or wiring
- Never use a pressure washer to clean the outdoor unit.
- Make sure children and pets don’t play too close to the unit.
- Call a professional if something seems off.
